Match Report
Canada needed about a minute to show what kind of night this would be — Qatar's only shot of the match came in the 1st minute, and it sailed wide. From there it was one-way traffic. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th off a corner, just after Mahmoud Abunada had denied Jonathan David from a similar spot, and David doubled it in the 29th, pouncing on the loose ball after a blocked Tajon Buchanan shot. Qatar's night turned disastrous in the 33rd when Homam Ahmed was sent off after a VAR review waved off a Canadian penalty claim but still produced a straight red, and David made it 3-0 right before the break, finishing off a saved Larin header. Assim Madibo picked up a yellow in the 51st and saw it upgraded to red by VAR two minutes later, leaving Qatar with nine men by the 53rd minute. Canada kept piling on: substitute Nathan Saliba curled in a free kick in the 64th, Mohamed Manai turned a goal-mouth scramble into his own net in the 75th, and David capped his hat trick in stoppage time off a Saliba assist to make it 6-0. A miserable night for Qatar — two red cards, an own goal, and a single shot to show for ninety-plus minutes.
