Ivory Coast stunned the group favorites early, going ahead in the 30th when Franck Kessié drilled a finish from the center of the box past the German keeper. Germany struggled to create much in reply for long stretches and made wholesale changes after the half — Rüdiger on for the injured Schlotterbeck, then Leweling, Undav and Amiri all introduced together in the 60th. The triple sub paid off: Deniz Undav leveled it in the 68th, turning in a Nadiem Amiri cross from close range, and Ivory Coast's resistance held all the way to the death. Germany finally got the winner in the 90th+4 — Undav again, this time finishing a Felix Nmecha through ball to snatch all three points at the buzzer. Germany finished with the better of the underlying numbers (59.4% possession, 16 shots to 9), but for long stretches this had the makings of a famous Ivorian upset before Undav's late double turned it around.
