New Zealand caught Iran cold — Just finished in the 7th to put them ahead, and Beiranvand had to push out a Singh effort at 19' to keep it at one. Iran leveled through Rezaeian in the 32nd. Then the second half played out almost identically: Wood played Just through on a fast break in the 54th and he finished right-footed from the right side of the box for his brace. Back to 2-1. Mohebbi responded in the 64th to make it 2-2 again. Both sides had late chances to win it — Taremi headed wide in the 80th, and Surman got his head to a set piece in the 81st from point-blank range and sent it well over (0.45 xG, the best chance of the night). New Zealand had eight shots on target to Iran's four. A draw that felt like a win avoided for Iran and a win squandered for New Zealand.
