A quiet first half, then four goals in thirty-eight minutes. Malen had gone close in the 3rd — Suzuki saved low — but both teams went in level at 0-0. It all kicked off after the break. Van Dijk put the Netherlands ahead in the 51st off a Gravenberch assist. Japan hit back in the 57th: Nakamura's equalizer. Three minutes later, Summerville picked up a yellow card for a rough foul — then promptly scored in the 64th, again set up by Gravenberch, to restore the lead. Netherlands looked to be holding it together. Then Kamada met Ogawa's corner with a header in the 89th and sent it to the top right — 2-2. Netherlands conceded two more yellows in the closing minutes (Depay 83', van de Ven 90'+1') and never recovered their composure. Japan had only three shots on target all day but two of them went in. A draw that felt like a loss for the Netherlands.
