Cape Verde refused to fold against the much bigger name on the other side of the pitch. Kevin Pina curled in a free kick to stun Uruguay in front of a sold-out Hard Rock Stadium, and although Maxi Araújo headed Uruguay level right before the break and Agustín Canobbio put them ahead with virtually the last touch of the first half, the smallest footballing nation at this World Cup came right back. Hélio Varela, on as a substitute, smashed a volley past Fernando Muslera in the 61st minute to make it 2-2, and Cape Verde nearly snatched a winner in stoppage time — Laros Duarte forced back-to-back saves out of Muslera in the final minutes. Uruguay had the better of the chances (17 shots to 12) but couldn't find a third, and Cape Verde leave Miami with a point that feels like a statement.
