Match Report
Spain didn't need to win this one — a point would have done it — but they won it anyway. Álex Baena put them ahead just before halftime, finishing right-footed from the centre of the box into the bottom left after Marcos Llorente found him with a cross at 42'. Baena was the best player on the pitch for 65 minutes before being subbed off, and he was booked early in the second half for his trouble. Uruguay couldn't find an equalizer despite pushing hard after the break — Ugarte limped off at the break (De la Cruz replacing him) and Muslera made way for Rochet at the start of the second half — but the closest they came was a De la Cruz shot saved by Unai Simón in the 85th. Canobbio was sent off in injury time to cap a frustrating night. Spain top Group H with seven points from three games. Uruguay finish third with two points — almost certainly not enough. Other groups are already producing third-place teams with three or more points, and Uruguay would need all four remaining thirds to finish below their 2 points and -1 goal difference to survive.
