Match Report

The U.S. struck early without really creating a clean chance — Mohamed Touré tested Matt Freese with Australia's best look in the 1st minute, but Cameron Burgess turned a U.S. press into his own net in the 11th to put the hosts ahead. Mathew Leckie almost answered immediately, curling a shot just over the top corner in the 12th off a Nishan Velupillay assist, and Australia settled into a stretch of fouling — Jordan Bos and Alessandro Circati were both booked before the half-hour. The U.S. doubled the lead right before the break: Alex Freeman headed home from a set piece in the 43rd, a goal that needed a VAR review to confirm before it stood. Australia pushed for a way back in the second half — Cristian Volpato fired over on a fast break in the 62nd, and Connor Metcalfe forced a low save out of Freese in the 65th — but couldn't find the breakthrough. Antonee Robinson picked up a yellow in the 56th, and the match turned increasingly chippy late on: Harry Souttar, Folarin Balogun, Jacob Italiano and Chris Richards were all booked inside a four-minute span between the 88th and 90th+3rd. A comfortable, if scrappy, 2-0 win sends the U.S. into matchday three firmly in control of Group D.
