Match Report

Egypt went ahead on 13 minutes and never led from open play again — but they're through anyway. Emam Ashour got on the end of a Karim Hafez cross from a set piece and headed home from the centre of the box, bottom left. Clean and simple.

Mohamed Hany had already been treated twice on the pitch — a delay at 32', another at 48' — and then at 55' he put the ball into his own net to level it. Australia 1, Egypt 1. After all that, the man causing stoppages handed the Socceroos their way back in.

Neither side could break the deadlock in extra time. Omar Marmoush, Egypt's biggest threat, came off at 105' — possibly to keep him fresh, possibly out of necessity. Haissem Hassan and Yasser Ibrahim both picked up yellows in extra time, Egypt walking a tightrope.

The smartest move of the night came at the 119th minute: Australia brought on veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan specifically for the shootout, replacing Patrick Beach. The mind games were real. It didn't matter. Harry Souttar went first for Australia and missed. Mohamed Salah stepped up for Egypt in round three and scored like it was nothing. Lucas Herrington missed Australia's fourth. Hossam Abdelmaguid buried Egypt's. 4-2 on penalties — Egypt into the Round of 16.
