Senegal were the better team for an hour and a half. Diarra opened it in the 25th — a clinical finish from close range that gave the Lions of Teranga exactly the foothold they wanted. Sarr doubled it six minutes after the break, and at 2-0 Belgium looked finished. They barely created anything. Seattle's crowd was waiting for the final whistle.

Then Belgium went berserk in four minutes. Lukaku headed in at 86 to make it 2-1. Tielemans — from the center of the box — headed in at 89 to level it. From dead and buried to 2-2 in the space of three minutes. Senegal were shellshocked.

Extra time was a war of attrition. Senegal, having led for 95 minutes, now had to hang on against a Belgian side that smelled blood. They did — until the 120th minute, when Tielemans stepped up to convert a penalty and send Belgium through. Heartbreak for Senegal. Tielemans with two goals in 31 minutes of football.
