England were the better side for most of it. Anthony Gordon bundled in from close range at 55', Morgan Rogers with the cross from the right. England kept shape, Pickford made a string of good saves — Álvarez at 47', Nico González at 69', Mac Allister at 76'. Argentina couldn't find the way through.

Then Scaloni threw on Lautaro Martínez at 81'. Nine minutes later the game was turned on its head.

85' — Messi found a pocket of space at a corner, rolled the ball to Enzo Fernández at the edge of the box, and he drove it low into the bottom left corner. England 1, Argentina 1.

90'+2' — Messi again, this time with a whipped cross from the left. Lautaro Martínez, 11 minutes on the pitch, rose at the far post and headed it into the top left corner. England shattered.

Toney and Rashford came on in stoppage time. There was nothing to be done.
