Croatia took the lead through Ivan Perisic — a composed left-footed finish from the left side of the box at 53'. Portugal looked rattled, so Roberto Martínez made four subs at once around the hour mark, throwing on Bernardo Silva, Francisco Conceição, Gonçalo Ramos, and Nélson Semedo. It worked almost immediately: Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and converted a penalty at 68', right foot to the centre. Then, at 81', Ronaldo himself was taken off — a sign Portugal were chasing the winner. They got it. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Gonçalo Ramos met a Rafael Leão cross with a header into the bottom-right corner. Croatia thought they'd equalized moments later — Josko Gvardiol turned in a Perisic cross in the 90'+13' — but VAR ruled it out for Pasalic being offside in the build-up. The decision sparked a furious reaction and several minutes of delays before Portugal saw it out. Portugal 2-1, into the Round of 16.
