Spain dominated — 55% possession, 15 shots to Portugal's 10 — but Diogo Costa made five saves to keep it level. Ronaldo had two big chances: Bruno Fernandes picked him out on the right side of the box at 12' and Unai Simón saved, then Pedro Neto set him up at close range inside the box at 37' and Simón got down again. Portugal also had injuries to manage — Nuno Mendes came off at 56', João Félix at 71'.

The goal came from two Spain substitutes. Ferran Torres came on at 75', Mikel Merino at 85'. In the 90'+1, Torres assisted and Merino finished from the centre of the box — left foot, bottom right corner. Bernardo Silva was booked at 89', Renato Veiga at 90'+4' as Portugal scrambled for an equalizer that didn't come. Spain into the quarter-finals, 1-0.
